Our Story

From a little shop on the Navigli in Milan

The steps that shaped our
journey to today

Our story began in 1953, in Milan, in a small shop along the Navigli canals, where we baked simple, delicious sponge cakes. From these humble beginnings, built on quality, taste and tradition, we grew from a local pastry shop into a company sharing our products in Italy and beyond..

Italian tradition still guides us today. We combine craftsmanship with passion to create simple, delicious treats. At Balconi, tradition isn’t just a heritage, it’s our way of working. Every product reflects our dedication to quality and our passion for creating moments of genuine enjoyment.

1953

The beginning of the Balconi® sweet journey with the softness of sponge cake.

Nerviano, the iconic place where it all started. After the second world war, M. Balconi opened his first pastry shop (‘dolciaria”) and dedicated his passion and care into bringing his ‘merende’ ( “light snack”) to Italians. His cakes were mainly tasty soft sponge cakes made with good quality ingredients.  His rapid success continued to grow as he started to break into international markets.

2013

The family grows with the tasty wafers and biscuits from Albaredo.

The beating heart is the cream room, where the magic of taste is born. Imagine a lab telling a story of passion and skill—here, technology ensures quality and consistency, but it’s the people behind it that makes the difference.

2023

Madeleines becomes part of our family

Softness of muffins and Italian madeleines becomes part of the Balconi® family in San Secondo Parmense.

2025

The flavour of sponge cake enters a new era. Pasticceria Freddi joins the Balconi® family.

In the heart of Castiglione delle Stiviere, the story of Pasticceria Freddi began in 1949. Founded by Luigi Freddi, it grew from a local bakery to a thriving industrial enterprise, across Italy and abroad. The sponge cake—symbol of tradition—was reimagined through modern technology. The bakery remains dedicated to using high-quality raw materials to satisfy a discerning audience.
